Norton Hill Primary School – Midsomer Norton, Somerset
Crendon Timber Engineering, a long-standing member of the Trussed Rafter Association (TRA), was appointed to design, supply, and install the roof structure for Norton Hill Primary School, Midsomer Norton, Somerset. The engineered timber package included flat-top mono roof trusses, duo roof trusses, truss-spandrels, gable panels and gable ladders.
The roofscape consists of two distinct areas, a shallow 15-degree roof and an independent higher level, higher pitch 35-degree top hat roof. The total span of the 35-degree roof was almost 19m with a height of over 6.5m. To safely transport the trusses to site & safely lift into position, the roof was formed in sections, with the trusses split both horizontally and vertically. The truss-spandrels & gable panels had to be split in a similar way. Crendon’s design approach enabled the roof to be constructed safely, utilising a safety deck over the flat-top trusses to allow the upper sections of roof to be installed. The roof design was led by our award-winning Senior Designer Jamie Underwood, supported by Crendon’s in-house estimating, contracts, and site teams.
Crendon utilised MiTek Pamir to model the engineered timber elements along with AutoCAD to prepare drawings and co-ordinate with other trades and structural elements. With early involvement in the project, Crendon’s design team were able to adjust the roof design to accommodate the 200kg MVHR systems in the roof space, as well as ensuring two-ply truss spandrels at fire break locations.
