Barchester Care Home - Wells, Somerset

Crendon Timber Engineering, a long-standing member of the Trussed Rafter Association (TRA), was appointed to design, supply, and install the roof structure for Barchester Care Home, in Wells, Somerset. The engineered timber package included mono roof trusses, duo roof trusses, and hip corner roof trusses.

Over height areas were dealt with via Top-hat truss design, with the truss fully spanning including over the walkway, as there was a shorter overall span at this roof height. While some areas required pre-cut firring timbers, for ease of erection and to aid in safe erection and for value-engineering, most falls were built-in to the truss shape.

The top section of roof was flat with shallow flat roof falls. The top hat areas were fitted using our decking safety system to remove the risk of falls from height, coupled with the main contractor’s own scaffold, crash deck and hand-rail system.

The roof design was led by Senior Designer Jeff Notton, supported by Crendon’s in-house estimating, contracts, and site teams. Crendon utilised MiTek Pamir to model the engineered timber elements along with AutoCAD to prepare drawings and co-ordinate with other trades and structural elements.

The Project Manager at the site in Wells, Somerset stated “From the outset, we’ve received a fantastic hassle-free service from Crendon – value-engineered and erected safely to high standards.”
